These six institutions have become representative of the struggle in Missouri Baptist life. In Fall 2001 five amended their charters and set up self-perpetuating boards of trustees. In Winter 2003, William Jewell College came under investigation.
WORD AND WAY This is the state paper of the Missouri Baptist Convention located in Jefferson City, MO. They received 48.41% ($450,000) of their operating budget from the convention.
MISSOURI BAPTIST FOUNDATION Located in Jefferson City, MO the MBF develops, manages and distributes financial resources for the benefit of Missouri Baptists’ mission and ministry efforts. Currently, nearly $6 million per year is distributed from the Missouri Baptist Foundation to benefit senior adult care, childcare, Missouri Baptist Convention, Missouri Baptist churches, Christian higher education, evangelism, international missions, and hundreds of other causes and Cooperative Program ministries. They received 13.18% ($200,000) of their operating budget from the convention.
WINDERMERE The conference center (camp) of Missouri Baptists is located in Camden County. They received 7.25% ($150,000) of their operating budget from the convention. In addition to the direct funds, convention camps and retreats accounted for a substantial portion of their income.
BAPTIST HOME FOR THE AGED Providing quality care for the elderly, this home is headquartered in Ironton with campuses also in Chillocothe and Ozark, MO . They received 4.48% ($400,000) of their operating budget from the convention. This money was used for benevolent care for aged Baptists who reside in the Baptist Home.
MISSOURI BAPTIST UNIVERSITY This small award winning college is located in St. Louis, MO. They received 11.43% ($1,012,000) of their operating budget from the convention and it was used for scholarships and direct aid for Baptist students.
WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE The oldest of the Baptist colleges in Missouri located in Liberty, MO. Started in 1849 with a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees chartered by the State of Missouri. They currently receive about 3% (approximately $800,000) of their operating budget from the convention and used as scholarships and direct aid to Missouri Baptist students.
COOPERATIVE PROGRAM A term given to the funding of the Southern Baptist Convention. Cooperative Program money is given by local churches to the convention. Traditionally 66% of this offering is used by the state convention where the church is located, the remaining dollars are sent to the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee for distribution to denominational agencies with a strong emphasis on mission work.
ESCROW The holding of money which will be turned over when a condition is met. The 2001 money being escrowed by the MBC has an annual total of about 1.2 million dollars.
PROJECT 1000 A group of Missouri Baptists who aimed to control the election of the President of the MBC by securing 1,000 like-minded individuals to attend the convention’s annual meeting and vote for a pre-determined candidate.
MAINSTREAM BAPTISTS OF MISSOURI A group of Missouri Baptists formed to oppose
the actions of the Project 1000 members. It is now disbanded.
